New Underwood: A Small, Tight-Knit Community

New Underwood, 24 miles east of Rapid City on Interstate 90, is a tight-knit community that serves the surrounding farming and ranching region with retail, education and community services.

In addition, the National Weather Service maintains a white-domed Doppler radar station just north of New Underwood. The station tracks weather throughout western South Dakota and into Wyoming. The town's population is 673, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2012 population estimate. About 60 percent of the residents work in Rapid City or at Ellsworth Air Force Base and see New Underwood as a quiet alternative to the larger population centers of the Rushmore Region.

The New Underwood School District has 257 students, kindergarten through high school, many of whom live in the surrounding rural countryside. The New Underwood High School sports teams, the Tigers, have successful programs, competing statewide among small schools. The swimming pool, public park and an active community center are also the focal points of the community. New Underwood has its own city government. Fire protection is handled by the New Underwood Volunteer Fire Department, and law enforcement is handled by the Pennington County Sheriff's Office.
