Hermosa: Where the Hills and Prairie Meet

Hermosa, Spanish for beautiful, is centrally located in the Rushmore Region and is known as the eastern getaway to Custer State Park in the Black Hills.

Once inhabited by the Lakota, this land was called Battle River Village, until it was renamed and founded 1886. Gold was the draw to Hermosa back then, but today visitors come for the plentiful hunting, fishing and hiking opportunities. Several campgrounds and vacation cabins are located in the Hermosa area.

Nestled between Harney Peak and the broad, fertile Cheyenne River valley, today Hermosa is home to about 400 residents. Its proximity to Rapid City – 18 miles – make it a bedroom community for Rapid City for people who prefer small-town living.

A handful of commercial businesses are also there, including Western Mine Service, Dakota Industrial Hygiene Inc. and the Black Hills Health and Education Center.
