Black Hawk: Best of Both Worlds

Black Hawk, the unincorporated community that borders Rapid City's northern edge, offers the best of both worlds. The community is a 12-minute commute from downtown Rapid City, yet it has the atmosphere of a small town surrounded by forest.
That could be one reason Black Hawk has seen steady population growth in recent decades. Between 2000 and 2010, the population increased by nearly 21 percent, to 2,898. Another reason is that reconstruction of Interstate 90, including a newly built Peaceful Pines Road exit, has made it easier to commute to Rapid City Ellsworth Air Force Base and other I-90 locations.
Black Hawk was founded in 1881 by Swedish immigrants, the majority of them from the same communities in Sweden. It served as a railroad stop on the Chicago & North Western rail line, which continues to operate along the northeast edge of the Black Hills.
Local housing in Black Hawk ranges from affordable single-family homes near Interstate 90 to upscale hilltop neighborhoods among the pine trees on the edge of the Black Hills National Forest.
Black Hawk is located in Meade County. Law enforcement services are provided by the Meade County Sheriff's Office, and an active volunteer fire department serves the communities fire protection needs. Black Hawk Elementary School is part of the Rapid City School District. Restaurants, banking, shopping, antiques, veterinary services and groceries are available in Black Hawk.
Black Hawk's proximity to Rapid City and other population centers attracted distributors and dealers that provide the region with products and services such as building products, landscaping materials, commercial equipment, boats, recreational vehicles, automobiles. Cabinetry and millwork maker Riss & Associates has a plant in Black Hawk.
